A Perfect Summer Day: Exploring Dubrovnik from the Sea
What is a perfect summer day for you?
For me, it is a day spent collecting new experiences, discovering something I haven’t seen before, and, of course, making time to simply slow down and relax. And if there is one experience that perfectly combines all three, it is a day spent on a boat.
Watch the sea sparkle. Magic.
Dubrovnik is already a place that feels special and unique, but seeing it from a completely different perspective makes the experience even more memorable. Once you leave the city behind and look back at Dubrovnik from the sea, you realize just how beautiful its setting really is — the historic stone walls, green hills and deep blue Adriatic coming together in one unforgettable view.
But the real adventure begins when you head towards the Elaphiti Islands.
Hidden Bays and Crystal-Clear Water
The Elaphiti Islands are a beautiful archipelago just off the coast of Dubrovnik, famous for their untouched nature, secluded bays, sandy beaches and crystal-clear sea. The three largest and most well-known islands are Koločep, Lopud and Šipan, each with its own unique charm.
Our boat took us away from the busy streets of Dubrovnik and towards the hidden bays of Koločep. One of the highlights of exploring the area by boat is the opportunity to visit the Blue Cave, where sunlight reflects through the sea and creates an enchanting blue glow inside the cave. The moment we arrived, everything felt quieter and slower. The only sounds were the sea, the breeze and the occasional splash as we jumped into the crystal-clear water.
It was one of those moments when you don’t need anything else.
Just the sun, the sea and a beautiful place to swim.
And perhaps that is the best thing about exploring the Elaphiti Islands by boat — you can discover little hidden corners and secluded bays that you simply cannot experience in the same way from land.
A Day on the Adriatic
Our private five-hour boat excursion was the perfect combination of adventure and relaxation. The skipper and hostess took care of everything, so all we had to do was sit back, enjoy the views and let the day unfold.
A Dalmatian picnic basket was waiting for us, along with wine, water and juice. Having lunch surrounded by the Adriatic, with nothing but blue stretching out in front of us, was one of those simple pleasures that make a summer day feel truly special.
After swimming and relaxing in Koločep, we continued towards Lopud, another charming island of the Elaphiti archipelago.
One of the highlights was visiting the famous Šunj Beach, known for its soft sandy shore. Sandy beaches are not something you see everywhere along the Croatian coast, which makes Šunj particularly special.
And, of course, we couldn’t resist joining in on a game of picigin, a traditional Croatian ball game played in the shallow water. It is playful, slightly chaotic and much harder than it looks — but definitely a lot of fun.
As we sailed back towards Dubrovnik, the sunset slowly appeared behind us, painting the sky in warm shades of gold and pink. The sea became calmer, the city lights began to sparkle in the distance, and everything suddenly felt a little more romantic.
Sitting on the boat, watching the sun disappear behind us, I couldn’t help but think that this was exactly what a perfect summer day should feel like. A day to remember, indeed.
More Than Just a Boat Trip
What I loved most about this experience was that it wasn’t simply a boat ride.
It was a chance to completely switch off for a few hours and to experience Dubrovnik differently. The crowds disappear, the city becomes a distant silhouette and the Adriatic takes center stage.
