Bablje Ljeto (Indian Summer) In Dubrovnik: The Early Autumn That Still Feels Like Summer

There is something appealing about visiting Dubrovnik when the calendar says autumn, but the Adriatic still feels very much like summer.

This is the time of year Croatians call bablje ljeto, literally translated as “grandmother’s summer”. In English, the closest equivalent is Indian summer — those warm, settled days of early autumn, when cooler weather has begun to arrive but summer still feels close.

In Dubrovnik, the sea remains inviting, afternoons can still feel summery, and the softer autumn light begins to change the character of the city. It is a season that brings together the best of both.

When Dubrovnik Begins to Change

The arrival of autumn in Dubrovnik happens gradually, almost unnoticed. As the height of summer passes, there is more room to wander, spend time outdoors and discover the city at your own pace.

Cafés and restaurants remain open, the terraces are still busy, and the Adriatic is very much part of daily life. But there is a noticeable shift in the atmosphere — fewer people on the streets, cooler mornings and evenings, and more space to enjoy the city without the rush of peak season.

Autumn does not change Dubrovnik. It simply gives the city a different rhythm.

Things to Do in Dubrovnik During Bablje Ljeto

With summer still lingering, things to do in Dubrovnik in autumn naturally extend outdoors.

Take the coastal path around Lapad, explore the Old Town or follow the walking routes around Petka. For a wider view, Mount Srđ offers a completely different perspective of Dubrovnik, while Lokrum is close enough for a spontaneous escape from the mainland.

The same Mediterranean character can be found at the table. At Restaurant More, autumn is a wonderful time to enjoy lunch, discover local flavours and make a meal part of the day rather than simply a break between sightseeing.

Later, make your way to Cave Bar More for a swim and a summer cocktail. Set inside a natural limestone cave, the bar lets you enjoy the Adriatic just as you would in summer — with a drink in hand and the sea right there.

The Light of Early Autumn

Perhaps the most beautiful sign that the season is changing is the light.

As September moves towards October, the sun sits lower over the Adriatic. Dubrovnik’s stone takes on warmer tones towards the end of the day, shadows stretch across the streets and sunset becomes part of the evening.

For this particular light, Natali Garden is one of our favourite places to be. Set within a beautifully restored 16th-century summer residence, just moments from Dubrovnik’s Old City, its garden brings together history, contemporary Mediterranean cooking and the relaxed atmosphere of a traditional ćakula — an unhurried conversation over dinner. As the evening settles in, warm stone, quiet gardens and the last light over Dubrovnik create a setting that feels made for bablje ljeto.

Late Summer, While It Lasts

There is a particular pleasure in visiting Dubrovnik at this point between summer and autumn. The city feels familiar, but the season has shifted just enough to change the pace of the day.

This is bablje ljeto — a short part of the year worth making the most of.
